Pets have a purpose in our homes and our hearts. They protect. They play. But most importantly, they love - fiercely and with great abandon. It's been said a dog is the only thing on eart that loves you  more than he loves himself. I believe that life without dogs is black-and-white; with them, it's Technicolor, and maybe just a little misty around the edges.

This sweet photograph is of my father and Bear, his 3-year-old Morkie. Bear loves my daddy. So sweet...

Jack-Jack's Call of the Wild

 

Shot with Nikon D300s + Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8; 1/15s at f/2.8 @ 42mm and ISO 1600. No flash used, just light from overhead lamp reflecting off white blanket and spot metering used.

My 18 month old Morkie, Jack-Jack, is getting in touch with his feral side. And he's expressing his displeasure with the thermostat setting. Since Dallas temps dropped to below freezing, he's taken to hiding out in our master bedroom and making a den for himself inside our feather comforter.

It brings back memories of required reading in high school, when I trudged through Jack London's Call of the Wild and learned how wolves will bury themselves in the snow, using their body heat - reflected in that small cavity - to warm themselves at night.

Apparently, that's what my little Jack-Jack has begun doing with my fluffy white down comforter. I'll find him curled up in a teeny-tiny ball, just a pair of shiny eyes amidst a puff of black fur, peering out at me from within the folds of my poofy white blanket.

The Ladybug: A Study in Contrast

The title of this post is way too self-important for what it really is: an experimental macro shot using my wide-angle lens. Sounds stupid, I know, but I was trying to shoot with just one lens the whole morning so I could carry minimal equipment. When Kyle noticed this ladybug on one of the granite stanchions lining the street, I had to stop and attempt a photograph.

I was surprised to see the results aren't half bad.

How do you keep a Morkie still?

How do you keep a Morkie still? I have no idea. The only way I can get photos of Jack right now is to have someone tackle him, and then I have to snap away while he wiggles and hope I get something workable. In this case, Veronica was holding him with his belly in her palm and his little legs were just swimming in the air. Whatever it takes for a good photo, right?

Don't waste your breath telling me dogs can't smile. I won't believe you. I swear, that's exactly what Eddie's doing in this photograph.

A Yorkie in the Sun

Lest you think Jack has somehow replaced Eddie in my affections, I have to share this photo. He's more handsome than ever since his recent haircut, and he's never happier than when he's basking in the sunlight.

He lights up our world

Yes, it's all blown out. I did that on purpose. I kinda like the artsy feel to it. Caught this shot of Jack with Veronica in San Antonio a couple weeks ago.

A comfy spot for a nap

Eddie slept quite peacefully on Veronica's chest during our last trip to San Antonio. I suspect it's because it was the only place he could lie down where my parents' Morkie, Bear, wouldn't bother him.

He's a handful...

When we brought home our 8 week old Maltese/Yorkie puppy, I had a vision for this photo. Thanks to my darling husband and his tremendous patience, I'm pretty happy with the results. The challenge with taking photos of little Jack is that I have to blow out the image in order to get any contrast between his black fur and black eyes.
