Pets have a purpose in our homes and our hearts. They protect. They play. But most importantly, they love - fiercely and with great abandon. It's been said a dog is the only thing on eart that loves you more than he loves himself. I believe that life without dogs is black-and-white; with them, it's Technicolor, and maybe just a little misty around the edges.
This sweet photograph is of my father and Bear, his 3-year-old Morkie. Bear loves my daddy. So sweet...

Journaling reads: My mommy is magic. Hugging her is like slipping into a warm bath, cuddling up in a down comforter, laying your head on the softest pillow and being enveloped in pure safety. Here, you're loved, no matter how ugly you are, no matter what you've said or done, how badly you've screwed up. I can't imagine facing life without her. I don't know how much time God's going to give me with her, so I'm making Mommy Time a priority, and I will savor every single second.

Journaling: There is a peace that can only be found at the ocean. Take every opportunity to walk along the beach. Preferably barefoot. There's something that happens when you allow the sand to squish between your toes, and the waves to lap across your feet, and then you begin to chase the foam as it retreats into the sea, and before long, you're kicking up the salty spray and throwing your arms wide as you toss your head back in wild abandon. That's peace, and freedom ... ocean style.

Journaling reads: Never underestimate the nurturing power of nature. Living in the city, we're surrounded by concrete noise. It keeps us immersed in the man-made, disconnected from even the simple turn of the seasons. Maybe it's my Irish roots, perhaps the Celtic blood in my veins, that gets such a charge from reconnecting with nature. Just a few minutes to soak in the beauty of Creation ... to witness the hand of our Creator at work ... it refills me, re-grounds me, and re-centers me.

Journaling reads: I like laughter. Lots and lots of laughter. In our family, we laugh. A lot. Out loud, and in stereo. We laugh at the ridiculous, at the stupid, at the silly ... in other words, we laugh at ourselves. Laughter is the glue that holds us together and the lubricant that smooths out some of our roughest patches in life. That's not to say we don't take things seriously. We do ... but we don't take ourselves too seriously. And I've got to say, that's one of the things I like most about us.

Journaling reads: Clever couples collect kisses. The first time their lips touch yours, it feels like the world stops spinning. When your love is new, you can spend forever on a really good kiss. But it's so easy to take those ksises for granted. They become punctuation in the dialogue of your relationship - a quick comma here, a short period there - when they could be an entire phrase, a juicy exchange, a savory conversation. You just need to remember to slow down once in a while!

Journaling reads: My Three Jims. James Lee (my brother) ... Arthur James (my father) ... and James Lawrence (my husband). By turns they've been my friends, my teachers, my tormentors, and my protectors. Even when they're being jerks, they still fill my life with joy. Every girl needs a Jim. I'm blessed to have not just one, but three.

Journaling reads: Take full advantage of every ice storm. It's always easiest to chosoe comfort. But sometimes, the greatest rewards require getting a little cold, wet, and dirty. ignore the impulse to indulge in an indolent day indoors ... at least for a little while. Bundle up. Grab your friends ( especially the furry, four-legged kind) and go outside. Inhale the icy air and embrace a little immaturity. After all, nothing cleanses the spirit quite like a morning spent playing in the snow.
